Pomegranate
Pomegranates are round, reddish-brown fruits with a hard, smooth exterior. They grow on shrub-like trees and are typically similar in size to a navel orange. The interior of a pomegranate consists of a white, pulpy mesocarp surrounding small seeds.
Cultivation
Pomegranates thrive in various regions of Peru, encompassing coastal areas and highland valleys. The favorable climate and soil conditions in Peru contribute to the cultivation of high-quality pomegranates.
Peru is renowned for cultivating diverse varieties of pomegranates. Notable among these are the Wonderful pomegranate, recognized for its large, deep red arils (juicy seed sacs), and the Hicacal pomegranate, distinguished by its lighter red color and sweet-tart flavor.
The current status of the Peruvian pomegranate
Peru has emerged as a significant exporter of pomegranates, successfully reaching international markets. Peruvian pomegranates are exported to various countries, including the United States, Europe, and Asia.

"In the 2021 season, spanning from January to June, Peru exported over 38,000 tons of fresh pomegranates, generating $80,680,955 in revenue. This represents a 5.5% increase in volume and a remarkable 28.2% surge in value compared to the previous season."
